Marine Equipment Conformity Assessment Modules

Marine equipment requires type examination (Module B) and either batch approval (Module F) or factory audit (Module D or E).

Module B

Most fire protection marine equipment requires Module B type-examination, together with either Module D, E or F.

  • The manufacturer must submit their marine equipment to a UK approved body such as BTTG®, for Module B type-examination.
  • The approved body assesses the equipment against the relevant testing standards, taking into account any marine type approval or carriage and performance requirements.
  • Any necessary testing can be carried out by BTTG® ‘s PPE laboratory or our IMO approved Fire laboratory.
  • Once the type-examination is complete, the manufacturer receives a Module B type-examination certificate for the equipment.
Module F

Suitable for simple marine equipment made in discrete batches, such as blinds and flooring.

  • Representatives of the UK approved body must visit the manufacturer and select samples at random from the batch to be approved.
  • The samples are tested by the UK approved body to ensure that the batch conforms to the relevant testing standard, and matches the performance of the original type-examination.
  • Once complete, a Module F certificate is issued against the relevant Module B certificate, and the manufacturer can make their UK declaration of conformity and apply the UK conformity assessment mark – the Red Ensign.
Modules D & E

Suitable for equipment made in continuous production, or with complex testing requirements, such as marine firefighter PPE.

  • Module D is annual audit of the manufacturer’s quality management system by a UK Approved Body.
  • Module E is annual audit by a UK Approved Body of the manufacturer’s product quality assurance, based on the examinations and tests carried out on finished products.
  • Once the initial audit is complete, a Module D or E certificate is issued listing the relevant Module B certificate, and the manufacturer can make their UK declaration of conformity and apply the UK conformity assessment mark – the Red Ensign.

Approval of Marine Equipment For UK Ships

UK conformity assessment ensures marine equipment meets UK regulations before applying the Red Ensign mark for use on UK ships. Approved bodies handle approval processes on behalf of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).

The latest UK Marine Information Notice on the UK’s marine equipment conformity assessment regime, as it applies in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, including obligations of manufacturers and other economic operators, is available below.
